Join Huron Pines and Michigan DNR Prescribed Burn Specialist GraceAnna Cooper for an in-person, two-day burn plan writing workshop on June 8–9 at Canada Creek Ranch in Atlanta, MI. This workshop is designed to build the technical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to create actionable burn plans for Northern Michigan's fire-dependent natural communities.
Who This is For
This workshop is intended for land managers in Northern Michigan looking to incorporate or expand prescribed fire in their stewardship work. If you believe that prescribed fire would be an effective management tool on your land, but aren’t yet confident in developing a burn plan suited to your management goals, this workshop is for you. Attendees will be asked to come with potential burn units in mind to work through with professional guidance.
What to Expect
Over two days, participants will explore the ecological and cultural benefits of prescribed fire, best practices for integrating fire into a management regime, Michigan's broadcast burning regulations, Northern Michigan fuel types, fuel breaks, and the effects of weather on fuels and fire behavior. The workshop will culminate in a deep dive into burn plan components, with dedicated time for attendees to begin drafting plans and ask questions specific to their sites. Our goal is for every participant to leave with a partially or fully completed burn plan. Following the workshop, attendees will be asked to finalize their plans and submit them to Huron Pines for technical review.
Our Objectives
Develop the tools and techniques to write burn plans tailored to your site conditions
and management goals.
Build a clear understanding of broadcast burning regulations in Michigan.
Strengthen relationships and technical skills among Northern Michigan’s fire practitioners and land managers.
Provide technical review of completed burn plans by the end of 2026.
Support implementation – we hope to hear about your plans being put into action, whether in 2027 or beyond.
